Twenty NSW schools were closed on Friday with intense hot weather sweeping the state.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a heatwave warning for NSW, urging residents to stay cool.
Some schools were closed due to adverse weather, bushfire-related events, emergencies or other incidents, the NSW Department of Education confirmed on Friday.

The schools impacted were:
- Barellan Central School
- Binya Public School
- Clare Public School
- Coleambally Central School
- Darlington Point Public School
- Edward Public School
- Goolgowi Public School
- Hillston Central School
- Lake Wyangan Public School
- Narrandera East Infants School
- Narrandera High School
- Palinyewah Public School
- Pooncarie Public School
- Rankins Springs Public School
- Tharbogang Public School
- Wamoon Public School
- Whitton-Murrami Public School
- Yanco Public School
- Yenda Public School
- Yoogali Public School
Hitting the 40s
Maximum temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid-forties in the coming days, across some parts of NSW.
In the heatwave warning, the Bureau said if your home is not cool enough, seek shelter in a library, community centre or shopping centre.
“Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of your home,” it said.
“If available, use fans or air-conditioners to keep cool.”
A cooler change is expected to set in towards the end of the weekend.
Fire ban in place
A total fire ban is in place for the Greater Sydney, Southern Slopes, Northern Riverina, Central Ranges and Lower Central West Plains regions.
A fire weather warning has been issued by the Bureau for the South Western and Northern Riverina regions.
Residents are urged to action their bushfire survival plans and monitor the situation through their local radio stations, the RFS website and the Bureau’s website.
Warm to hot conditions with fresh and gusty north to northwesterly winds will lead to elevated fire dangers on Friday.
Thunderstorms with little to no rainfall are possible and dry lightning is a risk.
