All signs are pointing towards a busy few weeks for the video game industry. Not only is the Tokyo Game Show about to open its doors to the public, but both Sony and Nintendo are expected to hold online events featuring new game announcements, gameplay updates and even hardware reveals. Fresh off the back of unveiling the PS5 Pro in a short video hosted by system architect Mark Cerny, Sony is reportedly planning to broadcast a special State of Play presentation on September 24. The event is expected to further showcase some of the ways the PS5 Pro will benefit existing PlayStation 4 and 5 games, and will also feature a number of new reveals, including the controversial Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone remasters.
The news was revealed by industry insider Jeff Grub, who told podcast listeners that the event “is almost certainly happening” on September 24.
With Sony setting up shop at the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) for the first time in five years and with PS5 Pro pre-orders going live on September 26, the timing of the rumoured State of Play broadcast does makes sense.
Based on Sony’s TGS line-up, the State of Play broadcast will almost certainly feature new gameplay footage for Death Stranding 2, as well as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Silent Hill 2 and Sonic X Shadow Generations.
If the event does take place next Tuesday, then expect Sony to make the announcement on Monday, September 23.
Sony may also use the State of Play event to announce the October PlayStation Plus line-up, so stay tuned for more information.
As for the rumoured Nintendo Direct, it was recently noted that the company has held of Direct conference every September since the launch of the Switch.
It’s believed Nintendo will continue this trend in 2024, and that the next Nintendo Direct will be headlined by the Switch 2 reveal.
Again, this would kind of make sense timing wise, especially with the amount of leaks coming out of Kyoto.
Indeed, it was recently claimed that Nintendo’s next console has entered the manufacturing stage in China.
The new console is reportedly larger than the current model, with a smaller bezel for more screen space, as well as a black and white colour scheme.
Elsewhere, Nintendo recently invited numerous developers and publishers to its North American HQ, leading to further speculation that a reveal is imminent.
The inevitable September Nintendo Direct could also be used to promote upcoming games such as The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Mario and Luigi: Brothership, and Super Mario Party Jamboree.
With Echoes of Wisdom launching on September 26, the Direct conference would most likely take place on either September 24 or September 25.
