Nicola Sturgeon and Hugh Grant send support to Janey Godley as she receives end-of-life care

Comedian Janey Godley has received messages of support from Nicola Sturgeon and Hugh Grant after announcing she had entered end-of-life care.

The comedian, from Glasgow, confirmed she was receiving end-of-life care in a video shared on Wednesday.

The 63-year-old cancelled her autumn tour earlier this month after doctors advised her to stop working.

In a video shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, Godley confirmed she was receiving palliative care and would be going into a hospice.

She said the “devastating news” was difficult to speak about after stating that she could no longer go through chemotherapy.

“The chemo ran out of options, and I couldn’t take anymore of it,” she said.

“The cancer has spread, so it looks like this will be getting to near the end of it, and it’s really difficult to speak about this and say it to people.”

Following Godley’s announcement, thousands of people around the world responded with messages of support for the comedian including Scotland’s former first minister.

Sturgeon said: “Sending you so much love, my friend. You are an inspiration.”

Actor Hugh Grant also responded saying: “cancer is a c**t. Much love to you.”

Nigella Lawson wrote to the comedian saying: “Oh Janey, this is heartbreaking. Thank you for all you’ve given the world – and for being you.”

Mark Hamil, best known for portraying Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, wrote: “Sending you much love and best wishes always, Janey. Love from your fan, Mark Hamil.”

Godley, who found viral fame with her dubbed pastiches of Nicola Sturgeon’s coronavirus news briefings during the pandemic, revealed she had ovarian cancer in November 2021.

In 2022 the comedian was given the all-clear and said in a post to X that a scan showed “no evidence of disease”.

However, she later announced that another scan had shown signs of the disease in her abdomen but added that she would continue with her tour in February and March 2023.
