Victoria Beckham will present her fall 2024 collection on the Friday of Paris Fashion Week–which means Nicola Peltz Beckham and Brooklyn Beckham have spent the past couple of days being photographed on the steps of the Ritz, sometimes carrying dust bags that I can only assume contain a selection of get-well-soon remedies for the Beckham matriarch. (Victoria suffered “a clean break” to her ankle earlier this week and has since been shuffling around Paris with a cast attached to her leg.)
But Victoria–brave, noble and well-accustomed to life in the chiffon trenches–is refusing to purchase sensible shoes. This is, after all, the same person who has forbidden herself from smiling in photos out of “a responsibility to the fashion community.” The whole thing feels reminiscent of the Baden Baden World Cup, when Victoria was reported to have worn Saint Laurent stilettos even while swimming. (Remember: a broken bone is temporary, but a personal brand is forever.) And yet, there was an even more nostalgic throwback to those Posh Spice days, when Nicola Peltz was photographed in a spring 2001 Dolce & Gabbana biker jacket first belonging to Victoria Beckham.
Though Brooklyn and Nicola have long modeled their image on their forebears–see: the buzz cuts, Spice Girls platforms, the matching denim and leather trench coats–it is perhaps the first time that Nicola has been granted access to her mother-in-law’s personal archive of noughties fashion. (Victoria Beckham wore that particular jacket with checkerboard jeans and tinted aviators to stand in the terraces of Old Trafford and watch Manchester United be crowned Premier League Champions in 2001.) That VB should allow Nicola to step into her own image is perhaps the ultimate endorsement: one that will surely quell tabloid rumors of inter-familial feuds and one that would be rivaled only by a Nicola Peltz catwalk cameo, which, judging by this photo, might just come to fruition later this week.
