And then there was one.
Through seven weeks of the NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs are now the lone undefeated team thanks to a big win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl.
The Chiefs are 6-0, but the way they got there hasn’t been typical of a Patrick Mahomes-led team.

Chiefs’ defence carrying the load
When talking about the Chiefs, most of the headlines are about Mahomes and the offence.
And rightfully so.
With three Super Bowls and two NFL MVP awards, Mahomes has already cemented himself as one of the greatest to ever play the position.
But through the Chiefs’ 6-0 start, Mahomes has thrown for just six TDs while being picked off eight times. He joins Peyton Manning (2015 Denver Broncos) as the only QBs in the last 30 years to throw more interceptions than TDs and have their team start 6-0.
So, with Mahomes putting up pedestrian numbers, how have the Chiefs started their quest for a third-straight Super Bowl undefeated without a blemish?
It starts with Steve Spaguolo’s defence. Through six weeks, it’s been the Chiefs’ defence that has been their most formidable unit. Sunday’s win over the 49ers is the 27th consecutive time Kansas City has allowed fewer than 28 points.
Talk about complimentary football.
They forced Brock Purdy to throw three interceptions, including two in the red zone, and allowed Mahomes to do just enough to beat Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers once again.

With the defence doing the heavy lifting, Mahomes and the offence, which has lost a couple of major weapons due to injury, have time to figure things out.
“It’s about playing team football and I believe if we continue to work, we’ll get better offensively throwing the ball down the field,” Mahomes said after the game. “But until then, it’s nice to know that we have a great running game, we’ve got a great defence and we’re able to execute whenever the time comes to win football games.”
It’s a terrifying thought for the rest of the league that can’t find a way to beat the Chiefs even as Mahomes and the offence go without their ‘A’ game.
Lions back in NFC North driver’s seat
While the Chiefs maintained their perfect status, the other undefeated squad heading into Week 7 didn’t fare quite as well on Sunday.
The Minnesota Vikings found themselves on the wrong side of a heavyweight divisional clash with the Detroit Lions.
Minnesota wasn’t going 17-0, and a 31-29 loss to the red-hot Lions on a late field goal is nothing to hang your head about.

But the Lions have been the best team in the league over the past few weeks, and it continued Sunday.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff is the driving force of this team right now. Once written off by the Los Angeles Rams, Goff is playing the best football of his career with the Lions this season.
For years, one of Goff’s weaknesses was his ability to make plays with pressure in his face. That seems to be a thing of the past.
Goff came into Week 7 leading all QBs in yards per attempt (11.6) when blitzed. On Sunday, the Vikings blitzed Goff on 55.2 per cent of his dropbacks. He made them pay, completing 13-of-15 passes for 163 yards and a TD, per Next Gen Stats.
“He doesn’t get frazzled. He’s tough. He’s competitive, and he’s reliable,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell said of his QB after Sunday’s win.
Pair Goff’s new-found pocket presence with the Lions’ powerful running attack, and the Lions putting up at least 31 points in their last three games makes a lot of sense. Defences around the league should be scared to face them.
What change will Jets make now?
The New York Jets have made plenty of headlines over the past few weeks.
They fired their head coach, demoted an offensive play caller and made a big trade for a star WR. All in the span of two weeks.
The moves were supposed to help turn their poor start to the season around and bring Super Bowl aspirations back to the conversation.
But after a 37-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night, the only thing the Jets (2-5) realistically look like they have aspirations for is a top-10 pick in next year’s draft.
Davante Adams, the Jets’ big addition by trade this week, may not be the saviour Aaron Rodgers was hoping he’d be. In their first game together since their time as one of the most dangerous QB-WR duos in Green Bay, the pair connected on just three passes for 30 yards in Sunday’s loss.
The Jets went all in with their chips to try and save their season. Unless they’ve got more to play, a season that started with such promise looks like it will end up as another New York disappointment.

Saquon Barkley said all the right things coming into Sunday’s matchup against his former team.
The Philadelphia Eagles star RB insisted there were no hard feelings between him and the New York Giants. Even with the Giants opting not to sign the former face of the franchise this off-season, letting him walk to a division rival instead.
“I want to be locked in and focused,” Barkley said earlier this week. “No one is making more of what it’s not.”
But then he saw fans burning his jersey as he walked into MetLife Stadium, and everything changed.
“In that moment, I was ready for 3rd and 1 — let’s just say that,” Barkley told reporters when asked about seeing his jersey in flames.
Barkley let his play do the talking on Sunday, as he torched his former team for 176 yards rushing and a touchdown in a 28-3 Eagles win. His 187 total offensive yards were 68 more than the entire Giants offence managed the whole game.
It was a tough look for a Giants squad that fell to 0-4 at home this season and put up its second straight offensive dud.
Meanwhile, Barkley will lay his head on his pillow tonight, thankful he’s wearing a different uniform this season.
Cooper finds his rhythm with Bills
It took some time, but WR Amari Cooper eventually showed the Buffalo Bills what he can bring to their offence.
After going without a catch in the first half of Sunday’s 34-10 win over the Tennessee Titans, Cooper broke out in the final two quarters and finished with 66 yards on four catches, including a touchdown on his very first reception as a Bill.
