Remember when there were concerns about the number of offences that had taken a step back to the start of the season?
It appears some quarterbacks took it personally.
Week 5 in the NFL started with Kirk Cousin providing another “you like that” moment throwing for 509 yards in a thrilling overtime win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Many would follow Cousins’ lead on Sunday, with six quarterbacks throwing for over 300 yards and five recording passer ratings over 100.
Unfortunately, Josh Allen didn’t get the memo.
The Buffalo Bills quarterback struggled to get much going through the air in a 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans, completing just 9-of-30 passes for 131 yards — 49 of which came on Keon Coleman’s big play — one touchdown and a 55.3 quarterback rating.
Khalil Shakir’s absence was noticeable against Houston, raising serious doubts about whether this offence can contend without a true No. 1 receiver.
This was especially apparent when Buffalo had the ball at its own three-yard line with 32 seconds left. The Bills needed to run out the clock to force overtime but also move the chains since Houston had three timeouts.
Three straight incompletions later, the Bills were forced to punt the ball back to Houston with more than enough time to set up Ka’imi Fairbairn for the game-winning field goal.

How much different would that final drive have been if Allen had a dependable target? Tough to say, although head coach Sean McDermott admitted that could have attempted to run the ball at least once but wanted the ball in Allen’s hands.
It’s fine for a team to try to be aggressive in that situation, but given the limitations in the passing game, this version of the Bills might need to rethink that strategy.
This was the third time this season Allen has been unable to throw for more than 200 yards, but it’s tough to pin it all on the Bills quarterback.
Through five games, Buffalo hasn’t had a player record over 100 yards. Granted, the Bills are trying to run a more balanced offence, but the team is about league average in rushing yards per game and in the bottom half in passing yards per game.
With limited cap space, it’s tough to expect the team to be an option for Davante Adams who is the top option who is reportedly available. Amari Cooper could be an option if the Browns decide to cut bait amid trade speculation, but Buffalo could have other possibilities depending on what happens over the next few weeks.
Through the first three games of the season, the Bills took advantage of some favourable matchups and received rave reviews after a 3-0 start. The last two games against more formidable opponents have maybe pumped the brakes on the Bills as a legitimate Super Bowl contender… for now.
Bengals waste Burrow’s masterpiece
Just when it looked like the Cincinnati Bengals would earn a much-needed victory, critical errors led to another deflating loss.
In Week 2, a pass interference call set up the game-winning field goal for the Kansas City Chiefs. In Week 5, a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter against the Baltimore Ravens evaporated.
You have to wonder what QB Joe Burrow was thinking after completing 30-of-39 pass attempts for 392 yards and five touchdowns, only to see his team drop to 1-4. You couldn’t have asked more from the Bengals passing game which saw Ja’Marr Chase shred the Ravens for 193 yards and two scores while Tee Higgins also found the endzone twice.

As good as Burrow and the offence was, the Bengals defence didn’t do its part as the Ravens put up a combined 520 yards and 17 points in the fourth quarter.
Even with the Ravens offence finding momentum, the Bengals still had a chance to win in overtime, with Lamar Jackson’s fumble putting a win on a silver platter. But Evan McPherson missed a 53-yard field goal attempt, which led to Derrick Henry breaking free for a 51-yard run that set the stage for Justin Tucker’s walk-off field goal.
The Bengals are in a critical spot but have two opportunities to right the ship against the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns. Safe to say, if the team doesn’t come away with wins, it could be another year without a trip to the post-season for Burrow and company.
Rookie QBs put on a show
Make that four in a row for Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders, who improved to 4-1 and scored 30 or more points in a third-straight game.
It wasn’t the most impressive performance by Daniels this season, but he showed why he was the second overall pick, showcasing his dual-threat ability. He had 82 yards on the ground (averaging 7.5 yards per carry) and showcased his arm with some pinpoint throws.
Washington is off to its best start in 16 years and Daniels became the first player in NFL history to record 1,000-plus passing yards and 250-plus rushing yards in their first five career games.
In the Windy City, Caleb Williams appears to be trending in the right direction after another solid performance. For the second time this season, Williams had over 300 passing yards and had a passer rating of 126.2.
Granted, this performance came against the Carolina Panthers, but seeing Williams develop chemistry with D.J. Moore will only help the young quarterback find more confidence as the season goes along. This has to be encouraging for Bears fans, considering Williams’ two 300-yard games are the most by any Chicago rookie quarterback.

Another 49ers collapse
To say this season has been frustrating for Kyle Shanahan’s team would be an understatement.
For the second time this season, San Francisco blew a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter against an NFC West rival. This time it was Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals who added to the 49ers’ misery.

Canadians have productive Week 5
