Netflix to stream live exhibition tennis match between Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz

Streaming giant Netflix are continuing their foray into live sport with a special exhibition tennis match.

The Netflix Slam will see 22-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal take on world No.2 and fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in Las Vegas.

The match is scheduled for March 3 at Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

Netflix has largely stayed out of the live sport space, but recently broadcast The Netflix Cup, which was an exhibition golf tournament featuring stars from Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing.

They also have a host of other sport-related content in their offering, including tennis series Break Point, Untold, Quarterback, Tour de France: Unchained and Under Pressure: The US Women’s World Cup Team.

The addition of another live sport event could be a sign they are planning bigger moves in the future.

Netflix will be hoping to lean on the success of Break Point with this exhibition match, although neither Nadal or Alcaraz were featured in the hit show.

“I’m very excited for my first visit to Las Vegas, one of the most iconic and entertaining cities in the world,” said Nadal of Netflix’s announcement.

“I’m also very excited to be playing with my fellow countryman Carlos Alcaraz. I am sure it will be a fantastic night of tennis.”

Alcaraz, who has won two grand slams including this year’s US Open, was honoured to share the court with Nadal.

“I’m honored and so happy to be sharing the court with Rafa in Las Vegas,” he said.

“He’s an all-time great, of course, and his records and achievements speak for themselves. Rafa also is one of the nicest guys on Tour and I look forward to our match on March 3.”

Nadal will make his eagerly awaited tennis comeback at the Brisbane International in January after almost a year’s absence.

The 37-year-old hasn’t played a competitive match since getting knocked out in the second round of this year’s Australian Open in Melbourne against American Mackenzie McDonald when struggling with a hip flexor problem.

The appearance could be the start of what will effectively be a grand farewell tour for the 22-time grand slam singles winner, whose ranking has plummeted to 663 after his 18-year stay in the top 10 ended in March.

Nadal says he plans to play the French Open and represent his country at the Paris Olympics next year before retiring at the end of his 23rd season on tour.

It’s been a long, hard fight for the battle-scarred, veteran champion to get back to action after he had initially been expected just to miss eight weeks of action after Melbourne, but ended up undergoing surgery on the hip in June.

Nadal missed the French Open, the tournament he’s won a record 14 times, and had announced at the time: “You never know how things will turn out, but my intention is that next year will be my last year.”
