Netflix star José de la Torre dies months after announcing serious illness

Spanish actor José de la Torre has died aged 37, just months after announcing he had a serious illness.

De la Torre, best known for his role as Iván in the Netflix series Toy Boy, died on Thursday December 5 and a funeral service was held the following day.

While his cause of death has not been disclosed, the actor revealed in June he had been diagnosed with an unspecified “serious illness.”

He had been undergoing treatment, keeping him out of the public eye for several months.

Tributes from fellow actors and performers have poured in following news of his death.

“It breaks my heart to think I’ll never hear your voice again, but I’ll keep talking to you. Love you endlessly, José,” actress Luisa Martín wrote on Instagram.

“I can’t believe you’re gone so soon,” Spanish singer Pablo Alborán said in a social media post.

“I’m devastated by your departure. I’m sending kisses to all of your family and friends.

“We’ll never forget you José. Wherever you are, I’m sure you’re wearing a Hawaiian shirt, a killer moustache, and those sunglasses like the ones we wore that day,” he said.

Toy Boy was a hit Netflix series about a male stripper, which ran for two seasons and concluded in 2021.

De la Torre also appeared in other Spanish TV shows, including Amar es para siempre, Vis a Vis: El Oasis, and Servir y proteger.

He graduated from the Málaga Higher School of Performing Arts in Spain and also worked as a model for high-profile fashion, jewellery, and accessory brands.

De la Torre was originally from Montilla, in Córdoba Province, Spain.

He is survived by his parents and sister.

His final Instagram post, dated June 3, featured a picture of him enjoying a music festival in the Canary Islands.

“The joy of arriving in the Canary Islands, seeing your friends, grabbing a mojito, and singing your heart out until you lose your voice,” he captioned the post.
