Police alleged they attended the home of Shay Bilney, 24, in Whyalla Norrie on Friday July, 21 and found the two-year-old girl wearing her nappy for such a long period of time that her skin was peeling.

Prosecutors told Whyalla Magistrates Court when police removed the nappy, they found the child had infected bruises in areas where the Velcro had been on the nappy.

The child and Bilney’s five-year-old son were taken to hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Bilney has also been charged with aggravated endangering life, the court heard.

Her lawyer argued in court that his client was a struggling young mum, “in dire need of assistance”.

The 24-year-old will return to court next Monday to find out if her bail application has been successful.
