NAB outage that plagued customers on Monday not a cyberattack, bank says

NAB has revealed widespread outages impacting online and mobile banking on Monday was not the cause of a cyberattack, as an expert calls for continued vigilance as customers are targeted by external scams.

The problem with mobile banking was resolved at about 5pm, while the issues plaguing internet banking were resolved closer to midnight.

“NAB experienced a technology issue yesterday that impacted internet banking and the app. This issue is now fixed. This was not as a result of any external cyber event to the bank,” a spokesperson said on Tuesday.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience this caused.”

While Monday’s outage was not a cyberattack, NAB has recently revealed that scammers are continuing to target customers.

Last month, the bank warned that travellers had been in the sights of nefarious online figures, with accommodation and ticket scams spiking.

On Tuesday, cybersecurity expert Susan McLean joined Nat Barr on Sunrise with a warning for all consumers.

McLean said the banking industry had started to consider fraudulent transfers to be a customer issue and we all needed to be more diligent.

“I know the banks work on ‘if you’ve sent it, clicked on the link, and haven’t checked, it’s your responsibility’. So, I think we need to do a lot with educating adults, in particular,” McLean said.

“We need people to understand that they should regularly check their statements, they should regularly check their bank balances, just to make sure nothing untoward is happening.”

Barr noted potential cyberattacks came from many sources and said she had recently received a text message claiming to be from Australia Post but actually appeared to be a scam.

McLean agreed there were many threats.

“Those text messages, I get them all the time, something in the post, unclaimed reward, Qantas Rewards, Flyby Rewards, click here. We need consistently better education for adults,” McLean said.

“These things simply are scams — they are not real. Educate yourself to visit the website, Scamwatch, which lists the most current scams.”
