Missouri man Francisco Gonzalez shot in the head during armed robbery at his backyard wedding

A Missouri man was critically injured when he was shot in an attempted robbery during his backyard wedding in St. Louis over the weekend, officials and family said.

Saturday was supposed to be a fairy tale ending: Dulce and Francisco Gonzalez were marrying in their backyard after a decade and two children together.

But as the night was wrapping up, two men in ski masks stormed the yard and robbed the family, and Francisco was shot, his family said.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said it responded to reports of a shooting just before 1am Saturday.

According to a police report, witnesses told officers that two men in ski masks entered the yard and announced a robbery.

While going through people’s pockets, one of the men, who was armed, pointed two handguns at a man, police said.

Both suspects ran away on foot.

Gonzalez was taken to a hospital, where he was in critical condition, according to police.

A GoFundMe set up by a family friend detailed the violence, saying that Dulce and Gonzalez were having a “small family ceremony” at Dulce’s home with “their two small children.”

“The family was robbed at gunpoint and her husband was shot in the head. He’s alive and in critical condition,” according to the fundraising site. “

“We need prayers that he will come through this.”

NBC News affiliate KDSK of St. Louis reported the Gonzalezes had been together for more than a decade and have two children, and 50 relatives were attending their backyard wedding ceremony.

Dulce’s sister, Yaribeth Peña, told KDSK she ran inside when she heard a gunshot.

She said that her brother-in-law was shot in the head and that the would-be robbers ran away without taking anything.

“He’s fighting for his life. We are hoping he pulls through. (My sister) is distraught, she’s depressed, she’s heartbroken. They were saying my brother-in-law was going for his wallet and maybe they thought he was going for a weapon,” Peña said to KDSK.

Peña lives next to the Gonzalezes and now fears for her safety, she told KDSK.

“I feel like we would have to move to feel comfortable. I would like for the community to help us locate these suspects,” she said.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
