Last year, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 left Tom Cruise fans on a massive cliffhanger.
Ethan Hunt was tasked with stopping a powerful AI called The Entity from falling into the wrong hands and preventing global catastrophe.
Much of Mission Impossible 7’s plot involved tracking down a key split into two that could either destroy The Entity or give it absolute power.
Dead Reckoning concludes with Ethan having secured both pieces of the key, but he does not yet know (even though the audience does) that they are specifically for the sunken Russian nuclear submarine on the Arctic Ocean floor, where The Entity’s mainframe is located.
So what used to be called Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2 will depict how it’s all resolved and now the first trailer and new title have been revealed.
Mission: Impossible 8 is now called Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, hinting that this could be the last movie in the franchise.
Although, given Cruise’s fondness for the character and youthful vigour for a man in his early sixties, we suspect this is more marketing for excitement around the blockbuster than an actual swansong.
The teaser shows off some exciting action sequences, from a plane stunt to Ethan locating the submarine, and the plot synopsis simply teases: “Our lives are the sum of our choices.”
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is out in UK cinemas on May 23, 2025.
