The object was found on a beach near Green Head on the state’s Mid West coast, but its origin is yet to be determined.
“At this time, Water Police are trying to identify the type and origin of the item,” Western Australia Police told 7NEWS.com.au.
“Officers are liaising with national maritime partners to identify the item.”
Some questioned whether the object was part of an aeroplane, but an aviation expert told 7NEWS it was highly likely the object came from a rocket which dropped into the ocean.
The expert said they believe it is not from missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370.
It is currently being investigated by police, the Australian Defence Force, and maritime partners.
