Miley Cyrus has been on a serious vintage fashion streak. At this year’s Grammy Awards the singer stole the show when she performed her hit “Flowers” on the main stage in a 2002 Bob Mackie dress. Her love of archival designs was also evident in the song’s music video, with Cyrus slinking about in a golden hooded gown from Yves Saint Laurent’s fall 1991 collection, among other throwback looks. Alongside stylist Bradley Kenneth, the star has mastered plucking retro silhouettes and making them feel modern.
It’s only natural, then, that Cyrus’s new music video for “Doctor (Work It Out)”—released today and made in collaboration with Pharrell—also features some winning vintage treasures. Among the outfits Cyrus shimmies in are a swishy Roberto Cavalli mini dress from the label’s spring 2004 collection and a spring 1991 Paco Rabanne chainmail look. In one set up, Cyrus sings while draped in an icy blue Birger Christensen Mongolian fur coat; It’s the exact same coat worn by Linda Evangelista on the September 1997 cover of Vogue. For the video, the coat is styled with vintage lucite earrings and bangles, as well as John Galliano-era Dior lucite rings.
While such pieces from the 1990s and 2000s could easily feel like costume territory, Cyrus wears them in a way that makes them feel very 2024 It girl. We’re here for it! “Miley is always my inspiration for everything we do,” Kenneth says. She’s ours, too.
