A young man has died after he was injured in a suspected stabbing in Newcastle in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The 22-year-old man was found by police at a home on Beaumont St in Hamilton with stab wounds about 2.40am.
Superintendent Kylie Endemi said the man was stabbed during a violent altercation with a group of people on the busy nightlife street.

Endemi said when police arrived, they were helped by members of the public in trying to treat the man’s “significant stab wounds”.
Paramedics rushed the man to hospital, however, he was declared dead a short time later.
“It’s important for us to understand what happened to this young man,” Endemi said.
“It’s important for us to do that so we can assist his poor family in understanding how and why this young man passed away.
“They are going through every family’s worst nightmare.”
A crime scene was declared that spans several streets.
Beaumont St remains closed between Tudor and Donald St, with motorists and pedestrians advised to avoid the area.
Endemi confirmed police have already spoken to a number of witnesses, and are continuing to seek information from members of the public.
“Please come forward and help us find out who’s responsible for this terrible incident,” she said.
Anyone with information about the incident, was in the area at the time or has dash cam or mobile phone footage is urged to call Crime Stoppers.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
