He saw the shark approach and fought it off, but his right leg was severed.

On Monday, McKenzie posted a group photo on Instagram with the caption — “Spot something missing?”

The 23-year-old earlier said it was “so good to have so many amazing people” behind him.

After undergoing surgery in Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital, McKenzie shared further details of the horrific attack.

“A few days ago I went through a crazy shark attack (biggest shark I’ve ever seen) which was a very crazy scene and scared the living f*** out of me,” he posted to Instagram on the weekend.

The surfer said it meant “everything” to be with his family.

“To all you kind-hearted people, all you legends, to anyone and everyone, all your support has meant the absolute world to me.

“It’s so cool to see so many beautiful people support me … we are so very grateful for everything.”

Meanwhile, McKenzie’s neighbour Lauren Mac has launched a GoFundMe for the young surfer.

“Please dig deep for this family to assist with Kai’s recovery and rehabilitation,” she said.

“The McKenzies are a local family with hearts of gold who would never expect or ask anything of anybody, so let’s give back and show them they have the community’s support in this.”

A retired police officer at the beach at the time of the attack has since been praised for his quick thinking after using his dog’s lead as a tourniquet to stem the bleeding before McKenzie was flown to hospital.

Authorities say the former officer’s actions “essentially saved (McKenzie’s) life”.
