While some deductible expenses such as your work phone are common knowledge, there are other expenses you might not know you can claim.

Some clothing items required explicitly for work may be eligible, including occupation-specific clothes or items required as part of a uniform.

If you work outdoors, you can claim protective clothing and even your sun protection such as sunscreen, sunglasses or SPF makeup.

Laundry and dry-cleaning costs can also be claimed for these items.

This deduction does not apply to regular office attire and must fall under specific guidelines, which the ATO outlines on its website.

Your work bag is also eligible for a claim, as long as it is used exclusively for work.

Working from home claims

If you work from home, you can also claim a number of deductions for this.

A portion of your home electricity and internet can be claimed, as can a portion of your heating, cooling and lighting bills.

You can also claim your stationery and office supplies, and tech items such as your home computer, tablets, printers and accessories including your keyboards and mice.

If you have a dedicated home office, you may also be able to claim cleaning expenses or occupancy expenses for your mortgage or rent.

You may also be able to claim deductions for expenses related to rental properties, such as gardening and lawn mowing, pest control, maintenance and repairs.

If you have dogs to protect your business, or for purposes such as farming, you can also claim expenses relating to their care.

Expenses such as their vet bills and food costs may be deductible.

Other lesser-known tax deductions are industry specific.

Ongoing COVID practices may mean you have to wear masks at work, or use hand sanitiser or antibacterial spray. If you have to purchases the items specifically for work, you may be able to claim it back on tax.

If you work in media and have to stay up-to-date on the latest TV shows for work, you may be able to claim a portion of your streaming subscriptions.

If you have to keep on top of news for your job, you may also be able to claim your news subscription services as well.
