Lana Condor on How Being Adopted Shaped Her View of Beauty

My understanding [of that] is that in America, we love contour. We love a little bit more of a sculpted look. I love lashes and I love a snatched look. When I’m doing my makeup every day, I’m getting in the contour and I’m going to the bronzer. I’m getting in there. But the direction was to be “more classically Asian beauty from Asia” — so no lashes, no contour. More of, like, “glass” skin, kind of inspired by K-beauty. In regard to trends and makeup, there is a difference.

My journey to finding out who I am and my roots is a very interesting one. Sometimes I win and sometimes I lose. That’s something that I very much loved about To All the Boys. [Lara Jean] is from a mixed family, so that was an aspect of the story that I really related to and made me feel like I could understand that world.

I think that my identity journey will go on forever and ever and ever.

Lana’s Favorite Things

Whatever the occasion or the role, these three mainstays are always in the actor’s makeup bag. —J.M.C.

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner

“It’s the only liquid eyeliner I’ve ever used. [The brand] changed the tip recently and I was bummed. It still works and is a holy grail for me.”

Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush

“The brand sent it to me and I love it very much. I believe it’s made in Korea. It makes sense that it’s so good. I’ve used this blush since [Selena Gomez] debuted her line.”

Saie Slip Tint

“I like it better than foundation for every day. I wear so much makeup for work, so if I don’t have to, I try and find a more natural way to do it.”
