Lamborghini’s New Plug-In Urus Is Its Most Powerful SUV Yet

Electrification is sweeping the luxury car world, with Ferrari adding hybrid power to its models, Maserati rolling out a full electric lineup and Porsche plowing ahead with its own electric ambitions. Now, Lamborghini has turned to plug-in power to create its most powerful SUV ever, the Urus SE.

The new Urus is a plug-in hybrid version of the best-selling SUV, and turns to electrical power to up the oomph. Thanks to its hybrid powertrain, the Usus SE clocks in at a mighty 789 horsepower – making it the most powerful Lamborghini SUV of all time.

To create all that power, the Urus SE pairs a twin-turbo, four-liter V8 engine with an electric motor that’s capable of producing up to 189 hp. Combined, the two power units kick out 789 hp and 483 Nm of torque, which is enough to take the Urus SE from zero to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds – down a whole tenth on the Urus S. It’ll continue accelerating up to a top speed of 193 mph.

What’s more, because this car has a plug and a 25.9 kWh lithium-ion battery, it’s capable of being driven in electric-only mode. With the V8 turned off, Lamborghini says the Urus SE can cover up to 37 miles of all-electric driving in EV mode.

As well as the new hybrid powertrain, the Urus SE also packs in a whole bunch of styling tweaks to make it stand out from the old Urus. There’s a new hood and refreshed face that features updated LED headlights, fenders and grille.

“The design and proportions of the Urus remain incomparable and absolutely recognizable as a Lamborghini,” said Lamborghini design director Mitja Borkert in a release. “We took inspiration from the Revuelto with the floating engine bonnet, achieving a very clean and muscular front design.

“The rear emphasizes a wider stance with a focus on the new diffuser and low-mounted license plates, while the rear mesh takes inspiration from Lamborghini super sports cars like the Gallardo.”

There are also interior updates on the Urus SE, including the installation of a larger 12.3-inch screen at the heart of the car. There’s also a set of new vents, that bring Lamborghini’s new Y-shaped design language inside, as well as new seat and dashboard coverings.

What do you think to the new Urus? Does it remain unmistakable Lamborghini, or is a plug-in hybrid SUV the kind of car that the Italian firm should only have made once hell froze over? Let us know in the comments below.
