“Can I ask why are the King and Queen are being driven around Australia in an Audi hatchback. Like, what the hell is going on there?” he asked co-host Jackie “O” Henderson.

“Did everyone see that? The King is usually in this big custom-made Bentley and we’ve squeezed him in an Audi hatchback. What’s the go?

“That to me is a national embarrassment.

“Why are they in an Audi hatch? Is there enough room?

“Why not the big A8, not the hatch.”

The King and Queen were seen arriving at St Thomas’s Anglican Church in North Sydney over the weekend in an Audi SQ8 e-tron, which retails for about $188,000 in Australia.

Henderson told Sandilands: “Charles prefers Audi due to their commitment to safety and reliability.”

But the shock jock said that sounded “like a press release from Audi in all honesty”.

Audi UK was awarded the royal warrant by King Charles in May to supply motor vehicles to the royal family for the next three years.

Andrew Doyle, director of Audi UK and former managing director of Audi Australia, wrote on LinkedIn at the time: “It’s not every week that you get correspondence from Buckingham Palace!

“However, when a letter lands with the Royal Arms embossed at the top there is always a little frisson of anticipation as to what lies within.

“So I am truly honoured and delighted to be informed that Audi UK has been awarded a royal warrant by King Charles as a supplier of motor vehicles to the Royal Household.

“This is fantastic news and we are delighted to continue working with the King and his team to assist them in their duties of representing the country and raising money for charity and worthy causes, something which Audi is very passionate about.

“The royal warrant is bestowed upon us for another three years and I couldn’t be prouder to work for the Audi brand at this time having received this news.”

Doyle stepped down from Audi UK in September and has since returned to Australia.
