Killed your houseplants? Bunnings shoppers discover ‘secret’ policy to return dead plants

Bunnings shoppers have discovered they can trade in their dead plants for a replacement or a refund within 12 months of purchasing.

The retailer’s “Perfect Plant Promise” has been around for years — but many say they wish they knew sooner about the “life changing” policy.

According to the warehouse, all plants — excluding seedlings and potted seasonal flowers — come with a one year warranty so customers can return them with a receipt if they are not satisfied with the purchase.

Perfect for people who are guilty of regularly killing their houseplants, the policy covers popular varieties such as monsteras, fiddle leaf figs, peace lilies, pilea peperomioides and bird of paradise.

The policy has been doing the rounds on social media in recent weeks after Sydney content creator Jessica Redolfi shared a now-viral video explaining how the plant promise works.

“Bunnings does not want you to know this secret,” she said.

“I bought these plants a few months ago and they all died over summer. According to the policy, if I buy a plant and it dies within 12 months, I can return it. As Iong as I have the receipt, I can get a full refund.”

Her video has been viewed more than 675,000 times — with many confessing they never knew about the return.

“Wow I did not know that. I wish I knew that before,” one said.

Another added: “I work at Bunnings and I didn’t know about this policy.”

One suggested: “I would have thousands (of dollars) back in my account (if I’d known).”

Another revealed: “Damn! I’ve had so many plants that have died from weeks after buying them.”

Many confirmed the returns policy works after they brought their dead plants back to the store.

“I purchased hedging plants 12 of them asked if they were able to be in full sun, the lady said yes. They all died and I got my money back for all,” one said.

Another added: “I did this. What they don’t tell you is about how embarrassing it is standing at the refund counter with a dead tree.”

Back in September, Bunnings customer Georgia was surprised when an employee urged her to keep her docket in case she needed to return her plants.

“As I was checking out, the lady was like, ‘Make sure you keep your receipt on your plants. I was like, ‘Why?’ And she was like, ‘Because they come with a 12-month warranty’,” she said in disbelief.

“She goes, ‘It doesn’t really matter how they die, we’ll just replace them for you within a 12-month period.’

“Do you know the amount of plants that have died on me? This is life changing information.”

A month later, Georgie filmed herself returning to the store with her dead herbs to get a replacement.

“Me having to use the Bunnings Plant Promise because I went away and my herbs died,” she said.

“So glad the staff member told me to keep my receipt.”

Many were amazed the policy worked, with one joking: “I did know this… but I refuse to let Bunnings know how many plants I’ve murdered.”

“Good to know this! I bought a whole bunch a couple of years back and only like two survived… just,” one said.

Another said, while laughing: “I won’t do this to Bunnings. I won’t make them pay for my mistakes.”

‘Bunnings secret’

Meanwhile, a former employee claimed: “Ex-Bunnings employee here. A Bunnings employee secret that isn’t meant to be shared with customers. I know there are signs in the nursery but people don’t see them.”

On the retailer’s website, most plants are guaranteed for 12 months so if you’re not 100 per cent happy, return your plant with receipt to receive a refund.

However, the policy excludes seedlings, which includes flower and vegetable seedlings as well as potted colour (bloomers) because they are “short-lived plants” that are not expected to live for more than three to five months in the garden.

“As such the Perfect Plant Promise would not apply to these plants,” the retailer concluded.
