Model Kendall Jenner looked especially sultry-eyed on the red carpet at last night’s third annual Academy Museum Gala. Styled by Dani Michelle in bright red Fendi (on a red-and-pink carpet to boot), her subtle beauty look was anything but basic.
It all started with her longtime makeup artist Mary Phillips’s “underpainting” technique, which is a social media sensation. Jenner is a L’Oréal Paris ambassador, so that was all that was in Phillips’s kit for the glamorous evening.
“I’m always using the underpainting technique!” Phillips shares. “I start off by applying cream contour around the perimeters of the face, jawline, and cheekbones. Next, I add concealer to highlight the center of the forehead, down the nose, and under the eyes. I blend the contour and highlight together and then buff in foundation, adding more contour or cream highlight wherever is needed. Once I’m finished with the creams, I lightly powder the skin, add bronzer and a pop of blush to the apples of the cheeks.”
From there, Phillips elongated Jenner’s eyes, which were the focal point of the night’s beauty look. “The wing brings emphasis to the eyes by elongating and defining them, giving a captivating and alluring look. The cat eye can be a focal point of a makeup look, adding a touch of sophistication and flair.”
For a “natural pouty lip,” Phillips started by using L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche lip liner in Au Naturale, and then created a custom blend for Jenner, mixing L’Oréal Paris Infallible Matte Resistance liquid lipstick in the shades Breakfast in Bed and Major Crush to get the soft nude shade.
“The emphasis is on enhancing natural features without being overly trendy, ensuring a timeless appeal.”
