Amidst a swirl of rumors surrounding her, Jennifer Lopez is trying to change the conversation. The singer stepped out of a black car in New York City today, making a statement via a white ultra-cropped tee that read, “JLo be my mama.” What is that statement, exactly? We aren’t quite sure.
What we do know is that Lopez used the opportunity to show off her abs (and a sliver of underboob.) Is this an act of revenge dressing? A commentary on how we call female celebrities “mother?” This isn’t the first time JLo has used fashion as a message. In August 2023, she teased her album with a Lingua Franca sweater embroidered with the phrase: “this is me…now.”

JLo paired her crop top with a pair of dirty wash blue jeans and white platform sneakers. The sole pop of color came from her Pepto Bismol colored cardigan. She accessorized the lowkey look with a woven basket purse and her signature oversized black sunglasses.
In her 2016 song “Ain’t Your Mama,” Lopez sings “I ain’t gon’ be cooking all day, I ain’t your mama / I ain’t gon’ do your laundry, I ain’t your mama.” So, while she may be retracting her previous statement in favor of a pro-mama position, we can at least all take it as a reminder to do our laundry.
