When it comes to festive hair, people usually go for one of two options: A long, loose style for a low-key yet luxe look or an updo for a more traditional take on seasonal glamour. If neither feels quite right this Christmas, though, look to Jennifer Lopez. This year she’s been pulling out all the stops, mastering the art of the red lip and perfecting sparkling rose-gold make-up. Yesterday, though, her honey-colored hair was the star of the show, having been coaxed into a bouncy party-season ponytail.
Although it might feel a bit ordinary for a December soirée, the humble pony is the perfect choice if you want to add a little interest to your look without appearing too “done.”
“Adding a bit of extra swish in the tail gives it more glamour and makes it feel festive,” advises celebrity hairstylist George Northwood. “It’s also great on the dance floor.”
As for how to get the same level of “swish” as J-Lo? The key is placement and product. “Positioning the pony higher at the back of the head rather than lower down keeps it more youthful and fun,” says Northwood.
Before tying your hair up, curl a few sections of your mid lengths and ends to add bounce, texture and glossiness without having to resort to backcombing. For those who want even more volume, spritz dry shampoo through your hair and massage it in.
Then, if your cut allows, pull your hair straight back off your face, leaving no strands around your hairline. This helps keep the style looking polished, and means you won’t have to worry about attending to any errant flyaways either. To ensure those fine hairs stay put, rub a styling cream like Bread Beauty Supply’s Elastic Bounce Leave-in Conditioning Styler Hair Cream through your hands before you scoop your hair back, and go back over your hairline for extra security.
