iPhone stuck in SOS mode? Here's how to get out of it

(KRON) — Thousands of Verizon customers have been affected by a nationwide outage Monday.

Some of those impacted users say their phones are stuck in SOS mode.

What is SOS mode?

SOS mode indicates that a device is having trouble connecting to the user’s cellular provider network, but it can make emergency calls through other carrier networks.

“If you see SOS of ‘SOS only’ in your status bar, your device isn’t connected to your cellular network, but you can still make emergency calls through other carrier networks,” according to the Apple website. The feature, according to Apple, is available in Australia, Canada, and the United States.

How to get out of SOS mode on iPhone

If your phone is stuck in SOS mode, Apple recommends attempting the following actions to get out of it:

  • Try to reconnect to your cellular network by tuning Airplane Mode on for at least 15 seconds and then turning it off
  • Restarting your iPhone or iPad
  • Contacting your carrier

During a similar outage earlier this year, AT&T recommended that customers connect to Wi-Fi to use their phones.

If you’re impacted by the nationwide Verizon outage, however, you’ll likely be stuck with SOS mode until the issue is resolved.
