For years, she said she spent a lot of time in Spain growing up and frequently spoke Spanish.

A People story at the time of the couple’s wedding said she wore a “Spanish veil” during the ceremony and the vows were read in both English and Spanish.

Hilaria said of the ceremony: “I liked that I brought in a bit of my culture.”

According to Business Insider, Hilaria’s mother Kathryn Hayward is a fourth-generation Massachusetts resident and father David Thomas once is originally from Nebraska.

Her parents have previously told news outlets they admire and study Spanish culture, and they lived in Mallorca for a while. At the time of the Baldwin’s wedding, Hilaria claimed there were about 40 family members visiting from Spain.

She later told The New York Times she was speaking colloquially, as only her family members to live in Spain were her parents and brother.
