Ineos, the car company dreamed up by the chairman of one of the largest chemical producers in the world with the mission statement to start selling stripped-back, no-nonsense, utilitarian 4x4s, just announced a new ultra luxury version of its stripped-back, no-nonsense, utilitarian 4×4, the Grenadier Detour. The new Detour models will be limited to 200 units, and will offer wealthy buyers the personalization that they demand when buying a car. Differences between the standard Grenadier and the Grenadier Detour will be generally limited to stylistic changes, though Ineos says the Detour will feature a re-tuned exhaust system to enhance the sound character and emotion of the turbocharged BMW inline-six under the hood of this giant solid axle, body-on-frame SUV.
Detour models will all be hand-finished in the UK using materials from British suppliers including leather from Bridge of Weir, cashmere from Johnstons of Elgin and unique badging from British jewelers at Vaughtons, all of which sound like shops from “The Lord of the Rings” franchise. Additionally, new Detour models receive new 18-inch wheels, a lightly restyled front-end, and eight new colors as well as a $14,500 paint-to-sample option allowing endless color choices, for a price, of course. Ineos is a company founded by the rich, for the rich, and the new Detour trim assures that.
The interior of Detour models should cosset passengers like no other Grenadier, with a cashmere headliner and added soft-touch materials for driver touch points. These luxuries shouldn’t detract from the Grenadier’s capable off-road abilities, though, with the interior still looking somewhat industrial compared to something like a G-Wagen.
The Detour is Ineos’ first model from its new Arcane Works division, which will produce small-batch, hand-finished special editions. Ineos also said the Arcane Works division will become a test bed for new tech and powertrains in the future. If you’re asking about the price of the Grenadier Detour, you probably won’t be able to afford it. It starts at $164,400 before any options, and top out near the $200,000 mark.
