In Conversation: Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña Talk Risk-Taking, Motherhood, and Their Ambitious New Film, ‘Emilia Pérez’

A few months after Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez had its splashy world premiere at Cannes—where the film took home the Jury Prize and stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Adriana Paz all split the award for best actress—Saldaña and Gomez sat down with Vogue to talk life, work, motherhood, womanhood, and their awesomely ambitious new musical crime thriller, now streaming on Netflix.

Over the course of their conversation, the performers—who play the wife (Gomez) and lawyer (Saldaña) of a transfeminine Mexican drug kingpin (Gascón) attempting to evade the authorities and begin her life anew—touch on some of their all-time favorite movie wardrobes (Catherine Deneuve’s in Belle de Jour for Saldaña, Emma Stone’s in Poor Things for Gomez), the importance of connecting with a movie’s crew, and the hardest they’ve ever laughed on set. (Molly Shannon playing drunk on the most recent season of Only Murders in the Building nearly did Gomez in.)

They also talk about the risks they took, making Emilia Pérez—Saldaña, a former ballerina, was terrified for the movie’s big dance sequences, while Gomez was nervous to play a mom—swap a few helpful tips for managing nerves, and ponder where their careers will take them next. Watch the full conversation above.
