Hair loss is a common phenomenon that affects millions of people in the UK, including men and women.
While some shedding is natural, more severe hair loss can be underlined by things like genetics or health problems.
Fortunately, there are methods out there to help prevent hair loss from happening.
A Harvard-trained doctor has recommended a simple and “science-backed” tip to tackle hair loss.
Dr Saurabh Sethi took to his TikTok channel to outline “the first thing” he tells his patients to do when they experience excessive shedding.
The doctor explained that every hair has a root with cells that need a good blood supply to keep growing.
The good news is that there’s a hormone that could boost this process and all you need to do is to ensure you sleep eight hours each night to boost its production.
Speaking on the channel, the doctor said: “Every hair has a root called the hair bulb deep within the skin – inside it are stem cells responsible for hair growth.
“These stem cells grow thick hair for about six to seven months and then stop, entering the regression phase and eventually dying off.
“Good blood supply to the hair bulb is key for restarting hair growth and this is helped by a hormone called growth hormone secreted mainly at night.
“Melatonin activated at sunset stimulates growth hormone during the night, promoting blood supply to hair follicles.
“So if you want to prevent hair loss, the first step is to get a solid eight hours of uninterrupted sleep every night.”
While this can be easier said than done, the doctor also offered some tips on how to make your bedroom the perfect oasis for sleep.
He recommended keeping the room where you sleep a little bit cooler, using blackout curtains to make the room really dark, and using a white noise machine to help you fall asleep faster.
