Honda CR-V’s Iconic Built-In Picnic Table Is Back And Better Than Ever For The 2026 Passport

Talk to any nerdy car person long enough, and they will eventually bring up how every version of the second-generation Honda CR-V came with a secret picnic table hidden inside. Underneath the cargo area’s carpet is what looked like a typical plastic cover for the underfloor storage area, but remove it and you’d discover that it was really a table that had pop-out legs. It was absolutely genius, and Honda never did something like it again. That is, until now. Honda unveiled the 2026 Passport today, and it’s offered with a removable table that’s even better than the one on the ’90s CR-Vs.

The new picnic table will be offered as a factory accessory for the Passport, and it doesn’t require any modifications or extra hardware to be installed. Instead of being under the floor like in the CR-V, the Passport’s table slots in as a sturdy cargo shelf that can hold up to 44 pounds, and it can be hinged at the rear to allow for easy access to the stuff underneath. The surface is rubberized and has a cool topographical map design that matches other storage cubbies inside the Passport.

To take the shelf out, all you have to do is unlock the four pins and lift it out. The surface is pretty light, so it’s easy to do on your own. The shelf comes with four sturdy metal legs that are attachable in seconds, and when not in use they get their own storage bag. When in use as a table, Honda says it can hold up to 300 pounds.

It’s not the only clever storage solution in the new Passport. The underfloor storage is split into two sections, one a large cubby and the other for the spare tire, and the cargo floor is split to allow for easy access. You can even spec a full-size spare tire that slots into that left side like in an old Jeep Cherokee. On either side of the cargo area are two more large open cubbies that can have MOLLE racks attached, and the new Passport has a ton of different cubbies and ten cupholders in total.

This is exactly the kind of thoughtful, useful design that we love Honda for, and it makes a ton of sense for a car as off-road-oriented as the new Passport, especially in TrailSport guise. The 2026 Passport overall is my favorite Honda design in years, and hopefully this playfulness extends throughout more of the lineup.
