The smell of popcorn will once again fill the foyer of an almost century-old cinema in regional Victoria which has been saved by one of Australia’s largest independent film distribution companies.
Ballarat’s iconic Regent Theatre abruptly announced its closure in June after 96 years of operation.
Management did not elaborate on the reason but said it was “a result of a number of factors” and operations would cease “effective immediately”.

The announcement devastated locals who were shocked at the news, given the cinema was still promoting new films just days earlier.
However, in a turn of events, independent film chain Palace Cinemas announced on Tuesday it would step in and revive the historic cinema — much to the joy of film-lovers in the regional town.
“Palace Cinemas is proud to announce it will be reviving the historic Regent Cinema in Ballarat,” it said.
“As the cinema approaches its centennial celebration since opening in 1928, Palace Cinemas will continue the tradition of showcasing blockbuster films cherished by locals while introducing our acclaimed international film festivals and premium upmarket films.”
The cinema will reopen on October 3 with $15 standard sessions for Palace Movie Club members in Ballarat to celebrate.
Locals rejoiced at the news, with many grateful Palace recognised how important the cinema was to the community.
“Thank you Palace Cinemas. The Ballarat community love the Regent Theatre and have for many, many years,” one local said on social media.
“It’s a relief that it will be reopened this year.”
Another said: “This is absolutely the best news! I am so happy that Palace is coming to Ballarat. A dream come true for lovers of international and Arthouse cinema.”
Regent Theatre staff have been invited to apply for roles at the revamped cinema.
“While the venue’s reopening will require building a team from the ground up, we deeply value the passion and experience of previous employees,” Palace Cinemas said.
