HDFC Bank: HDFC Bank’s online services hit by glitches

Mumbai: India’s largest private sector lender HDFC Bank faced an unscheduled downtime on its net banking and mobile banking operations Monday, which the bank attributed to partial disruptions to some operations that stand “resolved.”

“The bank had to take an unscheduled downtime earlier today (Monday) as some operations like transactions through RTGS and NEFT using net banking were affected,” a spokesperson said at the lender. “The issue stands resolved.”

Sources said NEFT and RTGS transactions through its banking channels faced glitches for nearly three days.

The spokesperson, however, said the net banking facilities were not affected for that time duration.

Customers took to the microblogging website X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to highlight the problem. “Is HDFC Bank server down?” a customer Abhishek Choudhari wrote. “Can’t access net banking or the mobile app.”

Another user Suma posted that she was unable to log in for an hour due to a server issue.Several other users complained of getting error, maintenance or downtime messages while logging in to the HDFC Bank systems. After facing more than a year-long ban on its digital banking operations, the lender has invested heavily to upgrade its IT systems.

HDFC Bank, which issued more than 200,000 credit cards a month, was directed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in December 2020 to stop issuing fresh cards until it had sorted out its tech problems. The central bank had also stopped it from launching any new digital initiatives. In March 2022, the RBI lifted all curbs on the private lender’s digital business activities.

In June 2022, the private lender said it is moving its payments platform out of its core banking module to enable minimal payment downtime, even if core banking is not available.

The bank has also set up a new centre in Bengaluru that is focussed on upgrading its mobile and internet banking platforms.
