Hawthorn delist former top-10 draft pick Denver Grainger-Barras after four years

Hawthorn have delisted former No.6 draft pick, Denver Grainger-Barras. The highly touted youngster managed just 28 AFL games, but none in 2024.

The Hawks are yet to announce their latest list changes after the conclusion of the trade period, but Grainger-Barras has already revealed the news himself.

“So grateful for the memories and brothers I’ve gained whilst at Hawthorn. You guys have helped shape who I am,” he said on Friday.

“Thank you to the fans, my family, and my friends who have stuck by me through all these years.

“Excited for what the future holds.”

Thee 22-year-old battled injury early in his career and, when he did get his body right, struggled to cement his spot in the team.

Grainger-Barras played a career-high 16 games in 2022, but just five in his debut year of 2021 and seven in 2023.

Grainger-Barras fell even further down the pecking order of key defenders at the club when Hawthorn lured St Kilda’s Josh Battle and West Coast’s Tom Barrass to the club to fill their stocks down back.

He is now hoping to be thrown an AFL lifeline, and may yet get one given to him, with some interest remaining from Carlton.

Earlier this week, 7NEWS Melbourne’s Mitch Cleary revealed Grainger-Barras met with the Blues last on Friday, but any move would be as a rookie or SSP signing.

Carlton, who have already signed Nick Haynes a free agent, are looking at more defensive options after delisting Caleb Marchbank.

Hawthorn sprung the first surprise of the trade period with a draft pick swap that had major ramifications.

After an uneventful opening five days, the trade period had a major shakeup last Friday when Hawthorn gave their first-round No.14 draft selection in return for Carlton’s 2025 first and second-round picks.

The No.14 pick was expected to feature in Hawthorn’s efforts to recruit West Coast defender Barrass.

The thinking had been that when that deal was struck, the Eagles would then use the No.14 selection to bring across Liam Baker from Richmond.
