GWS Giants ‘exploring’ possible reunion with Essendon veteran Dylan Shiel

Greater Western Sydney could turn to former star Dylan Shiel in a bid to boost their squad amid a player exodus.

Midfielder James Peatling is the latest name to depart, knocking back a contract offer in favour of a trade to Adelaide.

He will link up with Isaac Cumming, who is set to join the Crows as a free agent.

Fellow free agent Harry Perryman is set to join Collingwood, while veteran defender Nick Haynes, 32, is widely expected to join Carlton.

Peatling, Cumming and Perryman all featured in both of the Giants’ finals this year so the departures are a significant blow.

But as they deal with outgoings, 7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary revealed the club are exploring the opportunity of bringing Shiel back to the Giants.

Shiel, an inaugural Giant, played 135 games with the club before moving to the Bombers in a blockbuster trade.

He fell out of favour at Essendon this year, but did return in the second of the season and finished strongly.

“I understand the Giants will explore the possibility of a reunion with Dylan Shiel, who is open to a fresh start at another club,” Cleary said.

“He has one year left on his deal at Essendon, but there’s a big watch on what happens with Dylan Shiel now.”

Shiel had previously been linked with a move to St Kilda.

Meanwhile, Peatling turned down a long-term offer from the Giants to follow teammate Cumming to the Crows.

St Kilda, West Coast, Collingwood, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs reportedly had interest in the Giants academy product, before he made his request on Thursday.

Peatling became highly sought after following a breakout season in the GWS midfield.

The Sydney local broke into the senior side this season with 19 appearances after being drafted as a mid-season rookie selection in 2021.

Peatling was arguably one of the Giants’ in their five-point semi-final loss to eventual premiers Brisbane, nullifying Dayne Zorko and kicking two goals with his first two touches of the game.

He has played 45 games for the club and is the latest of the Giants players to depart.

Also, inaugural Giants player Adam Kennedy called time on his career earlier this week after 153 games for the club.

Kennedy did not feature in their 2024 campaign after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament for the second time last year.
