Guy Boucher and Mike Van Ryn join Maple Leafs as assistant coaches

The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Guy Boucher and Mike Van Ryn as assistant coaches, the team announced Thursday.

The move completes head coach Sheldon Keefe’s coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Boucher previously served as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning (2011-13) and the Ottawa Senators (2016-19). Under his guidance, both teams reached the Eastern Conference Final. The Notre-Dame-du-Lac, Que., native has an NHL record of 191-186-46 and also helped Team Canada win a gold medal at the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Former Leafs defenceman Van Ryn has been an assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues for the past five seasons, helping the team capture a Stanley Cup in 2019. The 44-year-old from London, Ont., also spent two seasons with the Arizona Coyotes and was head coach of the club’s AHL affiliate in 2017-18.

Boucher and Van Ryn move into their roles after former assistant coach Spencer Carbery was hired in May to be the Washington Capitals new head coach.

“One of my goals every offseason is to put together the best staff possible to help give us the greatest opportunity for team success,” said Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe in a team statement. “I’m thrilled to add experienced and accomplished coaches like Guy and Mike, as well as how the roles and responsibilities will now be shared amongst our coaching staff moving forward.”
