Green Party candidate calls Trump immunity decision 'one more crisis'

(NewsNation) — Green Party presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein told NewsNation’s “Morning in America” that Monday’s Supreme Court immunity decision is “one more crisis on top of many crises.”

The Supreme Court ruled that former President Donald Trump has absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts as president but not unofficial ones.

The case has been sent back to a lower court to determine which of the actions Trump is accused of are official acts, likely further delaying prosecution.

Stein said this Supreme Court decision is a “last straw” for many Americans.

“For the American people, things are not working,” Stein said. “The American people are in an all-out crisis and feel that the government and really all institutions of government are no longer trustworthy. The American people have lost confidence and feel like they’ve been betrayed.”

Stein also said that the country needs to consider reforms for the Supreme Court. Many have been calling for Supreme Court reform after recent decisions on issues like abortion access and homelessness.

“I support the term limits and after the kinds of decisions that were just handed down, we do have to think about expanding the court as an interim measure, but that is not a final solution here,” Stein said.

Supreme Court reform could also include the passage of the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act, which would require justices to adopt a code of conduct and was advanced to the full Senate in 2023.

Stein believes that the Supreme Court has been “extremely corrupted.”

“We need to get the money out of politics, the money out of our judiciary, the money out of our elections,” Stein said.
