Geelong premiership legend Joel Selwood and wife Brit welcome second child after fertility fight

The proud parents announced the news in a joint Instagram post on Friday.

“Our family just got brighter. Alfie Roy Selwood you are so loved by mumma, dadda and Joey,” they wrote.

Big-name identities from around the AFL world flooded the comments section with their well wishes.

Stephen Coniglio, Bec Judd, Demi Duncan and Emma Hawkins all commented, as did Casey Bell, who said: “Huge congratulations! Love the name.”

Alfie will be little brother to Joey, who turns two next February.

The Selwoods used a gorgeous photo of Joey to announce in February that baby No.2 was on the way.

In the picture, Joey was holding a hand-written sign reading ‘big brother to do list’, which also had their ultrasound clipped to the bottom of it.

They amusingly captioned their photo: “Joey’s still working out if he can sign the contract … he’s got until October.”

Listed on Joey’s things to do were “eat all your dinner” and “don’t throw balls at the baby”.

They then added: “We’re excited to be adding to the family 🤍.”

Joel and Brit went through an IV program to conceive Joey.

“We look forward to being ‘mum and dad’ and the world changing for us in the near future,” Joel said at the time.

“What I have worked out through this process is that women are amazing and my wife is a superwoman. In a journey that hasn’t been easy, we have found a way, through great support and Brit staying positive.

“To couples who are trying, have tried or can’t have a baby for some unfair reason, we see you and are sending love and positive energy your way.”

Joel bowed out of the AFL at the end of the 2022 season on the ultimate high, captaining the Cats to premiership glory in his 355th game.

It was Selwood’s fourth premiership as a player but first as a captain.

Selwood is a six-time All-Australian, three-time captain of the All-Australian team, and will go down in AFL history as one of the all-time great skippers.

Since retiring he has become a star AFL commentator across on Seven.

At the end of last year, Selwood, along with AFLW legend Erin Phillips, also took on a new role within the AFL’s football department.

That work involves game analysis, player engagement, and player movement across the AFL and the AFLW.

“I look forward to working at the AFL especially with the team lead by (football manager) Laura Kane,” Selwood said at the time.

“The game of AFL I have always loved and now it’s time to help it continually grow from a different seat which I can’t wait for.”
