Frizzy, dull hair? Amal Clooney doesn’t have to worry about it. That’s because the British-Lebanese lawyer’s trusty hair stylist, Dimitris Giannetos, is on the case. Giannetos, whose other clients include Megan Fox and Gigi Hadid, loves a detox shampoo. Hair expert and pharmacist Helena Rodero is in agreement—while you might want to reach for an ultra-moisturizing shampoo and conditioner when hair is feeling rough or dry, that’s not always the best solution.
“Detox shampoo gets rid of all of the styling products that are sitting on hair strands, making them look dull,” Giannetos tells Vogue. After a lather and repeat, hair “looks healthy again, and always way more shiny!”
Rodero explains in her book, Everything About Your Hair and Skin, that a detox shampoo is also ideal for the summertime for another reason: “When you’re on holiday where there might be hard water, or you are in contact with saline or chlorinated water, it’s a good idea to use detox shampoos. In fact, it should be the only type of shampoo you should use if you’re swimming at the beach or in a swimming pool.”
How to choose a good detox shampoo
The key is finding a shampoo that will remove product residue and any metals from water without changing the color of your hair (this will only happen if you dye it) or drying your hair out. Giannetos likes Moroccanoil’s Clarifying Shampoo and Frizz Control Shampoo, which get the job of cleansing done but also have super-hydrating argan oil so hair stays soft.
Rodero suggests also incorporating a monthly wash with a shampoo containing an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) such as citric or glycolic acid (Giannetos likes the Fructis Hair Filler Strength Repair Shampoo), it can further help cleanse, removing residue without stripping the hair of moisture.
