Four-year-old BMX riding prodigy Parker Grey comes third in under-16s competition

Four-year-old Parker Grey has upstaged kids nearly four times his tender age in a national BMX competition in the UK.

Parker, who hasn’t even started school yet, came third in the under-16s championships in Birmingham.

He got his first bike at just 18 months old and, quite clearly, didn’t take long to become proficient on two wheels.

“This sounds ridiculous, but it took him about 40 minutes to learn how to ride with pedals,” Parker’s dad Louis Grey told BBC.

“Once he figured out which way to push the pedals around, that was it — he was just gone.”

Starting a hobby at such a young age would almost invariably be by the design of a parent. But neither Louis nor his wife have ever been bike riders.

“I just love it so much,” Parker told BBC.

The pre-schooler has always been more interested in watching mountain biking and BMX riding than kids’ cartoons.

“We noticed him really getting into bikes in probably autumn last year, because all he wanted to do was just watch videos of people riding bikes,” Louis said.

The youngster got his first BMX at the beginning of this year and has taken to the sport like a duck to water.

He excels at flatland riding, but prefers the more thrill-seeking side of the sport.

“Everyone knows that Parker is the best at flatland, but it’s not fast enough for him, there’s no big jumps in it, it doesn’t excite him as much,” his dad said.

“He just kind of goes ‘Yeah, I can do that — it’s easy’, but it’s actually really difficult for many.”
