It is located just blocks away from Bankstown Airport.
More than 20 Fire and Rescue NSW trucks are currently responding to the blaze.
It is not known at this stage if anyone was hurt, but a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said they “imagined” people were evacuated from the structure.
“Fires at wrecking yards can burn extremely hot and fast,” Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said.
“The extreme heat and potential to spread rapidly can make these types of fires difficult to contain.
“Our firefighters are working to tackle the fire and ensure that all people are accounted for.”
Paramedics arrived about 2.30pm and are currently investigating whether anyone requires treatment.
There is a risk the fire may spread to other structures, the Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said.
Footage of the fire shows mass amounts of smoke billowing from the structure while planes continue to fly past.
“That looks bad, I hope everybody got out,” a witness can be heard saying in a video obtained by 7NEWS.
“All that water he just put on there doesn’t look like it did anything.”
Milperra Rd and Fitzpatrick St are closed due to the blaze, according to NSW Police.
People in the area are urged to stay indoors and keep their windows closed due to the smoke.
