(NewsNation) — A new report from the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General found that the FBI failed to take a basic step in preparing for the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, and that no FBI agents were involved in the attack.
The 88-page report concluded that no federal agents were involved in supporting the attack on the Capitol and that no undercover agents were present in the crowd.
The report found that although the FBI only played a supporting role to other law enforcement agencies, it did take some steps to identify domestic terrorism subjects who planned to travel to Washington, D.C., ahead of the vote to certify the 2020 election results.
However, the report noted that the FBI failed to canvass field offices ahead of the date to identify intelligence about potential threats. FBI sources told the OIG that it is common practice for the FBI to do so ahead of a large event, such as a presidential inauguration or the Super Bowl.
The report noted that performing a canvass would have created a more thorough understanding of the threat landscape ahead of the Jan. 6 riots.
A number of confidential FBI sources were present during the riots, the report found, some of whom did enter the Capitol.
The OIG also found that there was no critical information in the FBI’s possession that was not given to other law enforcement stakeholders ahead of the riots.
