Eleven-month-old baby fatally shot by toddler in parked car in San Antonio

An 11-month-old baby died after being accidentally shot in the head by a toddler inside a parked car in San Antonio on Monday, police said.

The deadly shooting occurred in a parking lot outside the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital, according to NBC News affiliate WOAI.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said in a press conference on Monday that three children — ages three, two, and an 11-month-old — were in the car with a woman.

One of the older children got ahold of a long gun that was located in the back of the vehicle and accidentally shot the infant, McManus said. Police are not sure how the weapon was stored.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner identified the baby as Khamari Khols Lang, according to online records.

“What we have here today is a terrible, terrible tragedy,” McManus said.

Lang’s aunt, Kheena-Marie Hutton, created an online fundraiser to support his family. It has raised over half of its $US5000 goal as of Friday afternoon.

“Khamari was just 11 months old, the youngest of six siblings,” Hutton wrote on the fundraising page. “He brought immense joy to our lives and was in the process of learning to walk. His loving spirit will be deeply missed.”

Hutton said Lang’s family recently moved to San Antonio and is searching for a new home and work to “rebuild their lives”.
