Doctor shares something foul about what lies on our hands every day

Dirty hands are the worst nightmare for those who value their hygiene.

However, many people are oblivious to the level of filth on their hands. Dr. Myro Figura, known as @doctormyro on TikTok, teamed up with @footdocdana to expose what our hands look like under a microscope – and the findings are startling.

As Global Handwashing Day takes place on Tuesday (October 15), it’s an opportune moment to emphasise the importance of handwashing. Once people see their hands magnified, they’re likely to pay much more attention to their health.

In the video, the doctors express their shock at the sight of hands under the naked eye. Upon closer inspection of a finger, it’s evident the skin is layered with dirt.

From specks of dust to a stray hair – all the particles of dirt instantly catch the eye. But, according to the experts, the invisible elements are the real concern.

Dr. Dana stated: “There can be over 3,000 different types of germs on this hand, so you’ve got to wash your hands. Hand hygiene is super important. It can help reduce up to 50% of preventable infections.”

The video garnered thousands of views since being shared, and social media users were quick to react. People were astounded by the amount of grime our hands accumulate daily.

One viewer commented: “I can never unsee that.” Another responded: “Ugh. Looking at things at the dentist is pretty disgusting too.”

Meanwhile, a third individual pleaded: “Please do a video on how to properly wash your hands.”

The NHS champions handwashing as a simple but highly effective defence against spreading common illnesses including food-related sickness and viruses such as the flu and coronavirus.

Echoing this, it’s suggested a person should wash their hands for as long as it takes them to sing “Happy Birthday” twice, which works out at around 40 seconds.

It is crucial to wash your hands in the following scenarios:

  • After using the toilet or changing a nappy
  • Before and after dealing with raw foods
  • Prior to eating and preparing meals
  • Following a sneeze, cough or nose-blow
  • When treating any cuts or wounds
  • Whenever you’ve been in contact with animals
