Disappearance of Celeste Marie McGain, 40, from Whitsundays town of Woodwark deemed ‘unexplained’

A woman was in “good spirits” before she vanished from her north Queensland home, having left behind her phone and bank card.

Celeste Marie McGain, 40, moved from northern NSW in February to live with her three adult sons in Woodwark, near Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays region.

About 2pm on May 25, she left their home. She has not been seen or heard from since.

“As Celeste has not had any communication with family members, that raises obvious welfare concerns because it’s out of character,” Detective Acting Sergeant Georgie Carland said on Wednesday.

“She doesn’t have her personal belongings — which include her mobile phone, bank card — that were left behind at her residence.

“We are concerned about Celeste having access to basic necessities — food, water — in regards to her welfare.”

McGain is not believed to have driven herself from the residence because she does not own a car.

Her disappearance is considered “unexplained” but not suspicious “at this time”, Carland said.

She said McGain’s family was “really worried” about her because she would “ordinarily” contact family members to notify them she had decided to travel.

There are no records of her flying out of the region.

“Our focus is anyone outside Celeste’s immediate family that may be able to provide police with further avenues of inquiry to assist in locating her whereabouts,” Carland said.

“We are urging anyone who knows Celeste, or who may have had recent communication with Celeste, or any type of association with her, to contact police.

“We are specifically urging anyone from the Woodwark area to check CCTV footage from their homes, as well as dashcam from vehicles, in the event they may show Celeste.”

McGain is known as “quite a good swimmer” having represented NSW in the sport in her youth.

She was seen at an employment agency in Cannonvale on May 7 — more than two weeks before her disappearance.

She was “well and in good spirits” on the day she was last seen, Carland said.

“Celeste, your family want to know you are safe and you are well,” the detective said.
