From January 19 to 28, the action house Grisebach will present 15 photographs by emerging artists from 11 different counties, selected through the open call “New Positions” taken in October and November 2023. The images will be paired with famous images by established artists such ad Edward Muybridge, Herbert List, and Erwitt Elliott, but also Sebastião Salgado, Nan Goldin, and Anton Corbijn.
This choice of creating a visual connection between new contemporary works and well-known images comes from the desire to underline how certain themes and genres can disrupt the conception of time and become eternal, remaining always poignant and meaningful. It also questions what lies behind the images we consider emotionally and financially valuable: do we collect them for the emotions they generate in us or do we desire them for the protagonists behind them? This collaboration between Der Greif and Grisebach is a playful yet challenging experiment, born out from their passion for photography throughout its evolution, from its origins to nowadays.
1100 artists submitted their works, sending a total of almost 8000 images, and seizing the opportunity to have their work seen by Der Greif artistic directors and Grisebach’s experts.
On January 9th, in the Munich exhibition rooms of Grisebach, Diandra Donecker (CEO at Grisebach with Daniel von Schacky), Dr. Caroline von Courten (Artistic Co-Director, Der Greif), and Dr. Monika Bayer-Wermuth (Senior Curator, Museum Brandhorst) engaged in a public discussion ands the photographs were exhibited in preparation for the photo action.
The exhibition will be also held on January 27th, in the Berlin exhibition rooms of Grisebach, and the discussion will see Diandra Donecker (Director & Partner at Grisebach with Daniel von Schacky), Dr. Caroline von Courten (Artistic Co-Director, Der Greif) and Christian Ganzenberg (Program Director, VARIOUS OTHERS) in conversation.
Our heartfelt congratulations to Sander Coers, part of our PhotoVogue community, who exhibited his work at the 8th Edition of the PhotoVogue Festival in November 2023.
