Darcy Cameron taken to hospital as concerns mount over Collingwood ruckman’s rib injury

Collingwood’s Friday night has gone from bad to worse with ruckman Darcy Cameron taken to hospital after their defeat to Essendon.

7NEWS understands the 28-year-old premiership player will be assessed for potential cracked ribs and any internal damage.

Cameron had been monitored during the week following a heavy hit at training.

He was given the all clear to face the Bombers and copped a fresh knock in the second half, spending some time off the bench at crucial moments before returning briefly.

Concerns around internal injuries are front of mind after Melbourne superstar Christian Petracca’s traumatic injury last month.

The Dees midfielder suffered four broken ribs, a lacerated spleen and a punctured lung after copping an accidental knee from Collingwood skipper Darcy Moore in the King’s Birthday clash.

Petracca was in agony but initially returned to the field, only to be taken to hospital while the game was still underway.

Meanwhile, Cameron’s trip to hospital on Friday night came after teammate Brody Mihocek suffered a suspected torn pectoral muscle that is likely to end his season.

Mihocek will undergo scans but Collingwood expect the 31-year-old will need to undergo surgery.

“As we always do we love and support, we get around our players and rally together,” coach Craig McRae said.

“It is what it is at times.”

The Pies are set to regain Dan McStay from his ACL injury in the coming weeks, with the big man firming for a VFL recall.

But injuries to continue to bite beyond Cameron and Mihocek.

Isaac Quaynor battled a toe complaint during the clash with Essendon and will likely undergo scans.

Before the blockbuster, Beau McCreery was cut down for at least a month with a calf injury while John Noble suffered a concussion last week and missed the game.

Collingwood are back in action next Friday night against Geelong.
