Dakota Johnson Was My ’70s Style Icon This Year

There were many fashion-forward stars who shined on the red carpets this year—be it the regular trendsetters like Rihanna and Dua Lipa, or new breakouts such as Ayo Edebiri or Lily Gladstone. But for me, there was one stylish actor who stood out from the rest: Dakota Johnson. The actor was my style icon of 2023. She has mastered a distinctive look that’s groovy and very ’70s, yet totally modern at the same time. Let’s dive into her wardrobe, shall we?

Given the ’70s are continuously referenced in fashion, it’s hard to make it feel hip and new, but Johnson has managed to do just that. How so? The star has skillfully combined staples from the era—long live bellbottoms and flowy maxi dresses!—with sleek new pieces. Back in April, for instance, Johnson was spotted out and about in New York City wearing a pair of wide-leg jeans that felt current thanks to their all-over Gucci monogram. She also paired it with a simple white tee and chunky loafers, for a finish that was very much worthy of a modern-day It girl.

On more than one occasion, Johnson has also taken the ethereal boho dress—another ’70s must—and made it feel fresh, too. In September, Johnson attended a screening of Daddio in Telluride wearing a white crochet Chloé maxi dress; That same month, at the Toronto International Film Festival, she hit the red carpet in a breezy (and sheer) printed Bode frock. Both looks felt effortless, free-spirited, yet updated.

Of course, none of these looks would be complete with a few of Johnson’s signature accessories, too: A pair of huge shades, and a Gucci Jackie bag. She’s worn both pieces with everything from a leather suit, to jeans and a tee. Whether she’s full-on dressing up, or dressing down, Johnson always delivers a total look. She’s simply one of the year’s best dressed.

Below, more of Johnson’s best looks of the year.
