(NewsNation) — President Joe Biden has urged Congress to provide more assistance to the Secret Service, suggesting it needs it in the wake of a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
Speaking to the media Monday morning, Biden said, “Thank God the president’s okay. … The one thing I want to make clear: the Service needs more help.
“And I think that Congress should respond to their needs if they in fact need more people. So, that’s what we’re going to be talking about.”
Biden released a statement Sunday condemning the second attempt on Trump’s life in 64 days.
“I am relieved that the former President is unharmed,” Biden said. “As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former President’s continued safety.”
Trump’s current presidential opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, also issued a statement Sunday.
“I am deeply disturbed by the possible assassination attempt of former President Trump,” a statement from Harris’s office said. “I will be clear: I condemn political violence. We all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence. I am thankful that former President Trump is safe.”
On Monday afternoon, Trump ripped Harris and Biden in a Truth Social post, contending they are responsible for the current political climate.
“The Rhetoric, Lies, as exemplified by the false statements made by Comrade Kamala Harris during the rigged and highly partisan ABC Debate, and all of the ridiculous lawsuits specifically designed to inflict damage on Joe’s, then Kamala’s, Political Opponent, ME, has taken politics in our Country to a whole new level of Hatred, Abuse, and Distrust,” Trump said.
“Because of this Communist Left Rhetoric, the bullets are flying, and it will only get worse!”
