Around 7.50am, the man was pulled from the water near Noosa Main Beach unresponsive.

Emergency services attempted to revive him, but he died at the scene.

Event organisers said the age group triathlete received immediate aid from fellow competitors towards the end of the swim.

He was taken from the water for continued medical assistance by water safety and medical personnel.

“Our condolences go out to the athlete’s family and friends, whom we will continue to offer our support,” organisers said in a statement on Facebook.

“We thank the athletes who stopped to provide aid, as well as the first responders and medical personnel who worked quickly to provide (him) with medical support.”

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Noosa is one of the sport’s top races and this year attracted more than 7000 competitors.

It is a 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run.

This is understood to be the third fatality among competitors in the event’s history.
