Commuter chaos as flooding disrupts roads and public transport in Sydney

Flash flooding has caused commuter chaos in Sydney with some roads closed and public transport routes diverted away from flood-affected areas following days of drenching rain.

Parramatta Rd near George St in Strathfield was closed early Friday morning due to water over the roadway.

Motorists were urged to find an alternative route, Live Traffic Sydney said.

Public transport services also copped the brunt of the wet weather, with buses diverting away from Botany Rd in Waterloo due to flooding at the intersection with Bourke St — with four regular stops being missed.

SES said crews had responded to 29 calls for help in the Sydney metro area overnight.

The Bureau of Meteorology said about 61mm of rain fell at Observatory Hill, while Chatswood received 55mm, Melrose 52mm and Marrickville 50mm.

Earlier this week, wild electrical storms hit parts of Western Sydney, dumping hail, downing trees and sparking fires.

Trees brought down at Denham Court closed Campbelltown Rd in both directions for some time, while property was damaged in Ruse and lightning started a grass fire at Leppington
